President & CEO
205-327-3801 (asst. Rita Thomas 205-327-3802)
Chris has more than 25 year experience in nonprofit and community work and has a deep-seated passion for philanthropy. His work has included developing programs to impact low-income families in the U.S. and abroad, counseling at-risk youth, advancing group violence reduction strategies and working with Latino community education. He also served as the Associate Principal of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago, the first Cristo Rey program in the country.
He was most recently Vice President, Programs for the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, one of the fastest growing community foundations in Indiana, where he led sustained, successful initiatives in areas including the care of the elderly and early childhood education.
Chris is building on the history of leadership at the Community Foundation to take on a more proactive role, identifying and tackling challenging but critical local issues that single organizations are not able to deal with alone. Current proactive initiatives include reducing homicides in Birmingham, providing an alternative to payday lending, strengthening workforce development in the outlying counties, developing comprehensive services for survivors of breast cancer, and creating a comprehensive plan to serve older adults in our community.
Chris has a Master’s in social-service administration from the University of Chicago and a Master’s in cross-cultural theology from the Catholic Theological Union. He earned his bachelor’s degree in theology and computer applications from the University of Notre Dame where he was a walk-on for the men’s basketball team.
He is a member of Leadership Birmingham Class of 2014, serves on the Eye Sight Foundation Board of Directors and the Women’s Breast Health Fund Advisory Committee.
