Four Spirits Monument Progresses as Anniversary Nears

Denise McNair’s face takes shape carefully under the skilled hands of Elizabeth MacQueen, the Birmingham-born sculptor commissioned to creating the Four Spirits memorial.

The monument, which will reside in Kelly Ingram Park, honors the four little girls killed in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church on September 15, 1963, as well as two young men also killed that day in other acts of violence. The girls will be posed around a bench in various states of action. Cynthia Wesley will be reading while Addie Mae Collins fixes a bow on Denise McNair’s dress. Denise will be reaching out to a flock of six doves, representing the spirits of the four girls and two young men. Watching it all, Carole Robertson beckons for the others to join her.

In the meantime, other commemorative events are also scheduled, such as the Sidewalk Film Festival’s screenings of Spike Lee’s critically-acclaimed documentary film, 4 Little Girls. The screenings will take place on August 21st and a list of venues hosting the documentary can be found on their website. Admission will be free, with donations taken to further the progress of the Four Spirits Memorial.

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham is proud to be serving as the fiscal agent for the Four Spirits Memorial project. Along with $25,000 gifts from the Community Foundation, United Way of Central Alabama, and City of Birmingham, gifts and pledges have been coming in from all over the country, for as little as $5 to much higher contributions.

You too can be a part of this community project. While fund-raising is nearly half-way there, every donation edges us closer to the $250,000 overall project budget, which includes the design, construction, and installation.
