Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Take a look at the curb market offerings at Hemphill Elementary School on Wednesday, April 3. As the sign at right shows, demand was high and after 45 minutes everything was sold out!
West End Community Gardens supplied the produce and the staffing, as part of an outreach by this program of Urban Ministry and with support from Community Foundation donors and Healthy Kids Healthy Communities. Parents were enthusiastic customers, as they took time to buy potatoes, onions, garlic and other items when they picked up their children from school. And they probably can’t wait until next week!
Even in food deserts like the West End neighborhood of Birmingham, where fresh foods are hard to find, the demand is already there. We are so glad to be part of a partnership that is finding effective ways to grow and distribute healthy foods to people who show a true hunger for them.
Together we can make this a community where people can lead healthy lives. You can give to support this Result through our secure on-line service.
