Thousands of visitors already know that Railroad Park is a great asset for our whole community. With the recent Phoenix Award from the Society of American Travel Writers, word is spreading across the globe.
A recent press release announcing the award was issued in Wellington, New Zealand, where travel writers from across the U.S. held their annual meeting. The Phoenix Awards “recognize conservation, preservation, beautification, and environmental accomplishments as they relate to travel,” according to the SATW website.
Railroad Park was nominated for the award by Annette Thompson and Karen Lingo, both former travel editors for Southern Living Magazine. They cited both the historical and environmental benefit as well as the potential to fuel future growth. Other winning projects were Vandenberg Reef in Key West, Fla., and Quartier des Spectacles, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, along with Herbert Kohler for his work in Kohler, Wisconsin.
Railroad Park also has received other kudos, including listing as one of the top 10 new parks in America by The Atlantic Cities, part of The Atlantic Magazine, and winning the People’s Choice in the Heart of Green awards by The Daily Green blog. As part of the original Three Parks Initiative, we’re proud to continue our support with a grant of $50,000 over the next two years to make this great community asset even stronger and our community sustainable, livable and vibrant.
