Jim Wooten of the IPC Foundation led a panel discussion at the Children’s Policy Council this morning to highlight the importance of summer learning for all our children, particularly those most vulnerable because of poverty and other risk factors. James McCrary, our Vice President Grants & Evaluation, joined the group, which included Karen Kapp of Better Basics, Melissa Self Patrick of Urban Ministry and Linda Tilly of Voices for Alabama’s Children.
Wooten shared the results of a resource scan by the National Summer Learning Association, showing that:
- About 18% of Birmingham’s youth participate in summer programs
- Few programs offer rigorous academic programs
- Too few programs focus on nutrition
- Programs do not often collaborate
