U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, M.D., brought attention to her home state by kicking off National Nutrition Month on March 1 at UAB.
The occasion was a perfect time for members of the Health Action Partnership to come together, because National Nutrition Month also shares an emphasis on healthy eating. Sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, this year’s campaign focuses on eating fruits and vegetables and understanding proper portion sizes.
Like the Community Foundation and other participants in the Health Action Partnership, Benjamin encourages everyone in making healthy choices easier, both by choosing nutritious food and being physically active. Kate Nielsen and Gus Heard-Hughes of our staff were proud to be part of the group meeting with Benjamin and sharing the successes of the Partnership. Contact Gus to find out more about this important part of our Results Framework.
A graduate of the UAB School of Medicine who previously practiced medicine in Bayou La Batre, Benjamin was appointed to her current post in 2009. Her Birmingham visit and presentation were sponsored by the UAB schools of Health Professions and Medicine.
