From the first day after the April 2011 tornadoes, the Community Foundation has been touched by the generosity of so many individuals, families and businesses, all looking for ways to give to help people rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
Thanks to donors in the past, we had an endowment available with flexible dollars and were able to immediately commit $200,000 to long-term recovery. Thanks to your gifts of more than $3 million for tornado recovery this year (including the Bama Rising benefit concert), we have been able to do even more.
Yet the needs continue, with one early estimate as much as $140 million for recovery efforts statewide. We have only touched a small part of that need with grants totaling $2.4 million by the end of December 2011.
Community Foundations across our country have played important roles in long-term recovery from disaster, whether in floods, hurricanes or tornadoes. As long as we have the resources to do so, we will do the same — and that depends on you.
