Wednesday has long been a big grocery shopping day — think of all the coupons you find in your local newspaper. Now it’s also a great day to find healthy options in produce with easy access for residents of West End and visitors to downtown Birmingham, thanks to markets at Hemphill Elementary and Railroad Park.
Every Wednesday through May from 2:15 to 4:15 p.m., West End Community Garden is organizing a market stand at Hemphill Elementary School. Hemphill also is a site for the “Walking School Bus,” another great way to make healthy choices easier for children as they get some exercise on their daily routes to school.
The 17th Street Plaza at Railroad Park is the site for more farm stands from 4 to 6 p.m. each Wednesday from April through October. Providers include WE Community Gardens, Jones Valley Urban Farm, Rosedale Community Garden and PEER/East Lake Farmer’s Market. (And you can stick around for a FREE Zumba class at 6 p.m.
We are proud to be just one of the partners helping to make these opportunities possible. Thanks also to the Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities effort and United Way of Central Alabama, Urban Ministry and WE Community Garden, Main Street Birmingham, Railroad Park, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama and the City of Birmingham through its schools and parks.
