The winner of the 2013 Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham Scholarship for 2013 is Shelby Wilson, daughter of Hattie Jackson-Wilson and a senior at Woodlawn Magnet High School. With help from this scholarship, which provides $2,000 per year for four years of college, she plans to attend Mississippi State University.
We expect great things from Shelby, who plans to return to Birmingham and give back to our community. As she said in a quote from her essay on the scholarship application, “I should never sit idly when something so positive is within me.”
The Community Foundation Scholarship was established by three funds of the Community Foundation, the I Have A Dream Foundation Fund. Herman E. and Eva E. Sellers Helping Hand Fund and Bessie Estell Fund. Awarded for the first time in 2005, the scholarship also is supported by the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham Scholarship Fund through gifts from donors who want to provide opportunities for higher education to students at Birmingham City Schools.
