Connecting ideas that lead to creative learning opportunities

They thought it was going to be a summer sports camp but when they found out they were going to have to do math and reading this brother and sister weren’t so sure about going. But after their first day at the American Baseball Foundation’s summer camp Perla and Christian couldn’t wait to go back.

Through SAIL the Community Foundation provided a grant to the American Baseball Foundation so they could partner with Jefferson County schools language department. Their summer program English learners combined sports, reading and math.

The students were tested at the end of the program and showed gains in both reading and math. Overall, the SAIL team felt that the first year was a success, not only did the kids build confidence in their reading and teamwork skills they also learn that hard work pays off both in and out of the classroom.

At the end of the summer Christian still wasn’t sure about having to study at sports camp but he did like playing soccer and reading about his hero, Cristano Ronaldo. Perla, however, liked both math and reading – her favorite book this summer, Because of Winn Dixie.
