From Pepper Place to Pell City, from Columbiana to Center Point, the USDA’s National Farmer’s Market Directory shows that our region is home to nearly thirty registered farmer’s markets. The announcement of this new market directory coincides with the USDA’s National Farmer’s Market Week, which started August 4 and runs through August 10, 2013.
In this, the height of the summer produce season, the Community Foundation will be shining a light on our work with a bumper crop of partners to increase access to fresh, healthy, locally-grown food in our five counties … and beyond. According to the USDA, this week celebrates “farmer’s markets as a place for communities – rural and urban, farmer and consumer – to gather.” We couldn’t agree more, and that’s why your Community Foundation is working hard to encourage the development and reach of new markets in under-served areas and to open access to individuals and families living on a limited income.
