The the East Lake Farmers Market is on the road, taking fresh produce to key places where seniors, children and families will be able to take advantage of healthier choices. Each Wednesday, starting now, you can catch up with the Mobile Market truck at the following locations and times:
- Shepherd Center East, (118 84th St N), 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
- Hawkins Park Recreation Center (8920 Roebuck Blvd), 3:30-4:15 p.m.
- Step-by-Step Child Development Center (6914 First Avenue North), 4:30-5:15 p.m
The Community Foundation is proud to add our support to this project run by P.E.E.R., Inc., a local organization that established the East Lake Farmers Market in 2005. Other partners included the USDA Farmers Market Promotion Program, United Way of Central Alabama and Main Street Birmingham, which provided a machine to handle federal benefits like SNAP electronically.
“The mobile market allows us to reach out further into the community where we already have strong roots,” said Sally Allocca, P.E.E.R., Inc. Executive Director. “With the Mobile Farmers Market, we can bring healthy foods to more people in more places at more times.”
We have been fortunate to support efforts in West End, where farm stands sold out quickly at local schools and hospitals, so we expect similar success for the Mobile Market. Join us with a gift on-line if you want to support this and other efforts to push toward this important Result for our community: People can lead healthy lives.
