Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham Launches Phase Two COVID Response Grants
This week, the Community Foundation announced the first round of Phase Two COVID response, awarding $410,000 in grants to 25 organizations. Since the pandemic began in March, the Foundation has awarded more than $2 million in grants to support organizations that assist the most vulnerable residents of the region whose lifelines to food, shelter, medicine and employment are at risk due to the pandemic.

REMY FUND AWARDS $55,000 TO LOCAL ANIMAL ORGANIZATIONS
Since 2011, the Remy Fund for Pets and Animal Services has provided $400,000 in grants to companion animal (dogs, cats and horses) nonprofits serving Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount and Walker counties. This year, the fund celebrates its 10th anniversary by awarding $55,000 in grants to 10 organizations.

Round 1 Grant Cycle applications open July 17, 2020 and are due July 31, 2020. Grants will be announced August 21, 2020.

Community Foundation's Emergency Response effort aids operations, essential services help for nonprofits
A $25,000 grant to the Crisis Center to cover the increased need for crisis and suicide counseling; $50,000 to UAB’s Minority Health and Disparities Research Center (MHRC) to support a program to provide vulnerable neighborhoods access to COVID-19 testing and care; $25,000 to Miles College to provide emergency assistance to students with financial needs; $5,000 to Coosa Riverkeeper for water quality monitoring due to increased public use of waterways during the crisis; $20,000 to Blount County Education Foundation to support summer camp with COVID-19 safety measures; $5,000 to Run Bike & Swim for remote fitness programming for children in Bessemer and beyond; and $50,000 to the City of Birmingham to advance the work of Birmingham Strong to engage displaced workers through the Birmingham Resilient Worker Fund.

Birmingham Business Relief Fund
In partnership with the City of Birmingham, a fund has been opened at the Community Foundation to support the small businesses and storefronts that sustained damage due to the unrest following the peaceful protests on the evening of May 31. The Birmingham Business Relief Fund was launched on Monday afternoon.

COVID-19 and the Birmingham Economy
During the unprecedented COVID-19 public health and economic crisis, the Community Foundation has partnered with local and national experts to offer a series of one-hour community conference calls addressing essential issues for civic, business and nonprofit leaders.

Community Foundation Awards Third Round of COVID-19 Emergency Response Grants
The following grants were awarded by the Community Foundation in our second round of COVID-19 emergency grantmaking. Rapid Response Grants address immediate, basic needs related to the COVID-19 crisis are awarded in amounts up to $25,000. Nonprofit Adaptation Grants are designated for organizational adaptations to avoid or mitigate disruption of services are awarded in amounts up to $5,000. To date, the Community Foundation has awarded $644,000 in emergency assistance grants to 39 organizations.
