Dreams of Hope Premiere
The concert documentary Dreams of Hope tells the story of a historic performance at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, more than 50 years after a hate crime there killed four African American girls. An initiative called Violins of Hope contributed musical instruments from the Holocaust; these violins were painstakingly restored as symbols of resilience in the face of hate, discrimination and racism.

Community Foundation Names New Board Members
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, the state’s oldest and largest community foundation announced that Kate Danella, Shegun Otulana and Mechelle Wilder are joining the Board of Directors with terms starting in 2020.

Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham Awards $1.38 Million in Grants
Birmingham, AL –The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced $1,384,500 in grants to 39 area nonprofits that focus on improving economic security and further developing sustainable, livable communities in Jefferson, Blount, Shelby, St. Clair and Walker counties. The Community Foundation supports programs and initiatives through discretionary funds entrusted to the Foundation by generations of donors.

Cromwell Scholarship Now Open
The Community Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2020 Cromwell Trust Scholarship application period opens December 3, 2019. Applications will be due Monday March 16th, 2020.

Community Foundation Awards Grant for Innovative Public Transportation Pilot
On September 24, the Birmingham City Council approved the Via Microtransit pilot program. Via Microtransit is an on-demand shared ride service that will complement and extend public transportation for select areas of the city of Birmingham as part of a six-month microtransit pilot. The service area for the program will focus on connecting “high need and underserved” communities with work, education, entertainment venues, health and government services in the city for an affordable, flat fee of $1.50.

Woven Together: Thriving Communities with Dr. Anita Chandra
Our third Woven Together Learning Series, which involves hearing from national experts around each of the Foundation’s five new priorities, took us on an exploration of thriving communities with Dr. Anita Chandra of RAND Corporation. Dr. Chandra presented on models for measuring community well-being and methods for using this data to shape more effective, community-responsive policies and programs. She highlighted a Well-Being Index that RAND first developed in conjunction with the City of Santa Monica and has since helped other communities adapt for their own use.
