Woven Together: Thriving Communities with Dr. Anita Chandra
Our third Woven Together Learning Series, which involves hearing from national experts around each of the Foundation’s five new priorities, took us on an exploration of thriving communities with Dr. Anita Chandra of RAND Corporation. Dr. Chandra presented on models for measuring community well-being and methods for using this data to shape more effective, community-responsive policies and programs. She highlighted a Well-Being Index that RAND first developed in conjunction with the City of Santa Monica and has since helped other communities adapt for their own use.

LGBTQ Fund provides grants to local organizations
The LGBTQ Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham announced a record $41,550 in grants awarded to ten nonprofits serving Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair and Walker counties. Thanks to generous donors, the fund has awarded more than $100,000 in grants to area nonprofits over the last four years.

Woven Together: Economic Opportunity for All with Amy Liu
For our second Woven Together Learning Series, which involves hearing from national experts around each of the Foundation’s five new priorities, we were excited to host Amy Liu, Vice President and Director of the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institution. Amy and Brookings are working with the City of Birmingham on a set of strategies around building an inclusive economy.

Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham awards $1.23 million in grants
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced $1,237,500 in grants to 43 area nonprofits that focus on improving education and providing access to healthcare in Jefferson, Blount, Shelby, St. Clair and Walker counties. The Community Foundation supports programs and initiatives through discretionary funds entrusted to the Foundation by generations of donors.

Woven Together: Regional Cooperation with Brad Whitehead
Our first Woven Together Learning Series, which involves hearing from national experts around each of the Foundation’s five new priorities, focused on Regional Cooperation and featured a conversation and panel discussion with Brad Whitehead. The panel was moderated by Brian Hamilton and included Steve Ammons, Sanjay Singh, and Mayor Stewart Welch.
