Birmingham, AL –The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced $1,384,500 in grants to 39 area nonprofits that focus on improving economic security and further developing sustainable, livable communities in Jefferson, Blount, Shelby, St. Clair and Walker counties. The Community Foundation supports programs and initiatives through discretionary funds entrusted to the Foundation by generations of donors.
Grants that will benefit Birmingham and the surrounding area include:
- $50,000 to Pathways to support a new child-care center in the Pathways building exclusively for homeless children.
- $70,000 to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to support hiring a Curator of Education and Programs to set institutions priorities and develop thoughtful, mission-centered programming and community partnerships, and a Director of Safety and Operations to ensure public safety.
- $40,000 to the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame to build a permanent studio home for non-profit jazz radio station 91.1 WAJH in the historic Carver Theater.
- $8,000 to Hoover Helps to support expansion of the Neighborhood Bridges program, a social media and email tool matching community resources with immediate needs of students.
A total of $2.6 million has been awarded through the Community Funds competitive grant making program in 2019, including $1,237,500 in May toward results related to education and health. Additional support for the grants came from Donor Advised Funds through the Community Foundation’s Giving Together program.
