Big Canoe Creek Nature Preserve in Springville, Alabama, celebrated its grand opening on February 3. An impressive crowd turned out for the much-anticipated milestone in the community’s journey towards environmental conservation and outdoor recreation. The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham awarded $25,000 to the city of Springville for the funding of the preserve during our 2018 Fall Grant Cycle.

Over the years, local citizens have worked tirelessly to preserve a part of the Big Canoe watershed, culminating in the Forever Wild Land Trust’s acquisition of 422 acres in 2018 and 2019. Partnering with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR), the City of Springville, and St. Clair County, efforts were directed toward developing recreational trails within the preserve. Today, 7.3 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails wind through the picturesque landscape, offering outdoor enthusiasts a sanctuary to explore and enjoy.

The opening of the Big Canoe Creek Nature Preserve underscores the power of collaboration between state and local agencies, businesses, volunteers, and environmental organizations. Chris Blankenship, ADCNR Commissioner, emphasized the importance of such partnerships in providing vital wildlife habitat and quality outdoor recreation opportunities for the public. Doug Morrison, Preserve Manager for the City of Springville, highlighted the preserve’s role in conservation education, fostering an appreciation for Alabama’s rich biodiversity among visitors of all ages.

The preserve promises to become a hub for nature enthusiasts and families with its array of outdoor activities. Plans for future expansion, including additional trails and educational pavilions, reflect the community’s commitment to fostering a deeper connection with the natural world. As Morrison aptly puts it, “People are obviously hungry for outdoor recreation, and we got it here now.”
