Year-End Charitable Giving Strategies
The weather is getting colder, the holidays are approaching, and you may be starting to think about year-end giving. While we are so grateful every day for all of you who partner with us to support our community, we especially make a point during this time of year to reflect on our deep gratitude for your generosity. Our region is so much stronger as a direct result of grants from your Donor Advised Funds, gifts to the Community Foundation, and the countless ways in which you have given back. As you think about your year-end charitable giving, particularly in a year that has seen volatile economic conditions, here are a few reminders:

LGBTQ Fund Grant Cycle is Now Open
The LGBTQ Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham is thrilled to announce the release of its Request for Proposal (RFP), launching the 2022 Grant Cycle. Grant applications are due online by midnight the evening of Friday, May 13, 2022.

Remy Fund for Pets and Animals Grant Cycle Now Open
The 2022 Remy Fund for Pets and Animals Grant application period opens March 15, 2022. Applications are due by midnight, Saturday, April 30, 2022.

Small Business Impact Grant supports a Happy Angel
Kerlyn Mendez has always had an entrepreneurial spirit, but it wasn’t until she moved to Alabama in 2016 that she decided it was time to start her own business. Her passion for decorating and crafts led her to the leadership courses at ¡HICA! that helped her develop a plan for her own floral design and decorating business. In 2019 she received a loan from Affinity Group Lending, ¡HICA!’s micro-loan program supported by a grant from the Community Foundation, and opened her own business, Happy Angels.

Community Foundation Names New Board Members
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, the state’s oldest and largest community foundation, announced that DeLynn Zell, Ruffner Page and Selwyn Vickers, M.D., FACS, are joining the Board of Directors with terms starting in January 2022.

Community Foundation closes out 2021 grantmaking with $1.27 million to 42 organizations
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced $1,277,00 in grants to 42 area nonprofits in Jefferson, Blount, Shelby, St. Clair and Walker counties. This is the second round of grants awarded under the Community Foundation’s new strategic plan that was launched in 2019.

December 11 Tornado Relief and Recovery
The tornado outbreak that ripped through at least six states this weekend devastated entire communities. We are monitoring the situation and working to compile a list of trusted organization that are responding to the catastrophe. Here are some ways that you can help with immediate and long-term relief and recovery efforts. We will continue to update this list as we get more information.

GRANTS AWARDED FOR THE PUBLIC HEALTH BENEFIT OF COMMUNITIES IN THE VICINITY OF ABC COKE
In February 2019, the Jefferson County Board of Health (JCBH) and the United States filed a complaint against Drummond Company, Inc. alleging violations of the federal Clean Air Act at the ABC Coke facility in Tarrant. The Jefferson County Board of Health, United States, and Drummond agreed to a settlement of all of the U.S. and JCBH claims against Drummond; this included a civil penalty paid to the JCBH in the amount of $387,500. On March 10, JCBH approved a transfer of $387,500 for the Jefferson County Public Health Advised Fund of The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. The funds established the ABC Coke Fund to be used for grants that benefit the public health of the City of Tarrant, the North Birmingham community, and Birmingham’s Inglenook neighborhood.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION LAUNCHES SMALL BUSINESS IMPACT GRANTS
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has awarded $1,155,000 in grants to six Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs) and other community-based lenders in the region. These grants are intended to increase the lenders ability to offer more patient, flexible capital that is targeted to the needs of small business owners, with a particular focus on Black-owned businesses. In addition, they will provide resources for in-depth technical assistance and support.
